Common Twin Cities Lawn Weeds and How to Control Them
Maintaining a healthy lawn in the Twin Cities comes with a unique set of challenges.
Twin Cities lawns face a wide range of seasonal challenges. Long winters, wet springs, summer heat and compacted soil can weaken turf and create space for weeds to spread.
Effective weed control is not just about treating visible weeds. It also requires improving the health and density of the lawn so weeds have fewer opportunities to return.
Common Weeds in Twin Cities Lawns
Crabgrass
Crabgrass is an annual grassy weed that commonly appears along driveways, sidewalks and other hot, dry areas.
Because it grows from seed each year, prevention is usually the best approach. Crabgrass pre-emergent treatments should be applied in the spring before soil temperatures consistently reach about 55 degrees, which typically occurs between mid-April and mid-May in the Twin Cities. Once crabgrass is visible, it is easiest to control while the plants are still young.
Dandelions
Dandelions are perennial weeds with deep taproots. Removing only the flower and leaves will not prevent them from returning.
Individual plants can be dug out if enough of the root is removed. For widespread dandelions, a selective broadleaf treatment may be more effective. Fall is often an ideal time to treat established dandelions because the plant is moving nutrients into its roots before winter.
Creeping Charlie
Creeping Charlie is especially common in shaded, damp or compacted lawns. It spreads through creeping stems and can quickly form dense patches. Small areas may be removed by hand, but all roots and stems must be removed to limit regrowth. Established patches often require repeated treatments, along with improvements to drainage, soil compaction or shade conditions.
Clover and Plantain
White clover often appears in thin lawns or areas with low available nitrogen. Plantain commonly grows in compacted soil and high-traffic areas.Treating these weeds can improve the lawn’s appearance, but addressing thinning turf, nutrient needs and soil compaction is important for long-term control.
Wild Violet and Quackgrass
Wild violet and quackgrass are both persistent perennial weeds. Wild violet spreads through underground rhizomes and can be difficult to treat because of its waxy leaves. Quackgrass is a grassy weed that also spreads underground, so standard broadleaf weed treatments will not control it. These weeds may require targeted treatment and repair of heavily affected areas.
Prevent Weeds With Better Lawn Care
Healthy, dense grass is one of the best defenses against weeds.
Mow Higher
Maintain the lawn at approximately three inches or higher. Taller grass shades the soil, encourages stronger roots and helps prevent weed seeds from germinating. Avoid removing more than one-third of the grass blade during a single mowing.
Repair Thin Areas
Bare and thinning areas give weeds space to grow. Late summer through early fall is generally the best time to overseed Twin Cities lawns because cooler temperatures support cool-season grass growth.
Aerate Compacted Soil
Compacted soil can prevent grass roots from receiving enough air, water and nutrients. Core aeration can improve growing conditions, especially in lawns with heavy foot traffic, pet activity or dense soil.
Water Appropriately
Frequent, shallow watering can encourage weak roots and consistently damp surface conditions. When irrigation is needed, water deeply enough to reach the root zone.
Follow a Seasonal Weed-Control Plan
Weed control should change throughout the Minnesota growing season.
- Spring: Apply crabgrass prevention and inspect the lawn for winter damage.
- Late spring and summer: Treat young weeds, mow higher and reduce stress during hot or dry conditions.
- Late summer: Aerate and overseed thin or compacted areas.
- Fall: Treat persistent broadleaf weeds and fertilize based on the lawn’s needs.
